Seven Planning Topics, Each With a Clear Edge

Birch River Horizon helps you put wishes, papers and accounts in order. For each topic below you will find what we do, what we leave to licensed professionals, and how fees work. We organise and explain; we do not give legal, tax or medical advice.

Our Seven Topics

Choose one topic or combine several. Select “View Details” on a card to see what is included and where our part ends.

Inheritance & Asset Overview

A calm walk through what you own, what you owe and who may be affected, ending with a one-page overview and a list of questions for a lawyer, judicial scrivener or tax accountant.

What we do

  • List real estate, bank accounts, securities, insurance, debts and memberships
  • Note where each paper is kept and where the login hints are (never the passwords)
  • Sketch who might inherit, as you understand it, for a professional to confirm
  • Flag items that usually need a professional, such as inherited real estate or a tax filing
  • Prepare a short list of questions for that professional

What stays with licensed professionals

  • Deciding who the legal heirs are and in what shares
  • Calculating and filing inheritance tax (tax accountant)
  • Registering inherited real estate (judicial scrivener, or you)
  • Any dispute between heirs (lawyer)

Fee: quoted individually, in writing, before any work begins. The first conversation is free.

Will Preparation Support

We help you decide what you want to say in a will, and in which form. A licensed professional or a notary prepares the document that carries legal weight.

What we do

  • Explain in plain English the two forms most used in Japan: a handwritten will and a notarial deed will
  • Talk through whom and what you want to name, and why
  • Write your intentions as a draft you can bring to a professional
  • List practical questions: witnesses, safekeeping, how to update
  • Note a date to review the will after a move, a marriage or a bereavement

What stays with licensed professionals

  • Drafting a will that meets the legal requirements of form
  • Making a notarial deed at a notary office (公証役場)
  • Advice on legally reserved shares for close relatives (遺留分)
  • Questions about the Legal Affairs Bureau storage system for handwritten wills, which you can ask the Bureau directly

Fee: quoted individually, in writing, before any work begins. The first conversation is free.

Digital Legacy Notes

A written list of your devices, accounts and subscriptions, with a note of who should be told where it is kept. We never ask for, or hold, your passwords.

What we do

  • List devices, email, cloud storage, social media, subscriptions, payment apps and domain names
  • Record for each one what it is and where the recovery information is kept
  • Note what you would like done with each: keep, close, hand over
  • Decide who is told where the list is
  • Suggest a password manager or a sealed envelope at home for the access details

What we do not do

  • Store, hold or manage your passwords, keys or recovery phrases
  • Log in to your accounts or deal with providers on your behalf
  • Decide what a provider will release to your family: each provider has its own rules
  • Give legal or tax advice on crypto assets or online businesses

Fee: quoted individually, in writing, before any work begins. The first conversation is free.

Family Memory & Legacy Recording

Guided prompts for letters, audio notes, video messages and a short family history. You do the recording; we help you know what to say and keep it organised.

What we do

  • Give interview-style prompts for each format, from a letter to a phone video
  • Help shape a family timeline with captioned photographs
  • Plan which message goes to whom, and when it is shared
  • Show simple ways to record on a phone and keep copies in two places

What we do not do

  • Provide professional film, audio or print production
  • Keep the recordings for you: copies stay with you and your family
  • Offer counselling or grief therapy: please see a counsellor or doctor for that

Fee: quoted individually, in writing, before any work begins. The first conversation is free.

Care & Medical Wishes Notes

A short note about the care and treatment you would or would not want, and who you would like to speak for you, prepared for a conversation with your own doctor. This is not medical advice.

What we do

  • Prompts about where you would like to be cared for and what matters most to you
  • A one-page note in your words for your family and your doctor
  • Questions to take to your doctor or care manager
  • Suggestions on who should keep a copy

What stays with others

  • Medical advice and treatment decisions: your own doctor
  • Legal effect: in Japan such notes (ACP, 人生会議) guide family and doctors but do not bind them the way a will does
  • Formal guardianship arrangements: a judicial scrivener, a lawyer or the family court

Fee: quoted individually, in writing, before any work begins. The first conversation is free.

Funeral & Memorial Pre-Planning

Write down the farewell you would like, so your family is not left guessing: the kind of ceremony, who should be told first, and where you would like to be remembered.

What we do

  • Prompts on ceremony style, music, flowers, a photograph and who to invite
  • A note of existing arrangements: temple or church ties, a grave plot, a columbarium
  • A one-page summary for your family
  • Questions to ask funeral providers when the time comes

What we do not do

  • Sell funeral services, grave plots, or insurance or trust products
  • Recommend a particular funeral provider or temple
  • Quote funeral prices: providers set and explain their own

Fee: quoted individually, in writing, before any work begins. The first conversation is free.

Document Organization Support

One folder your family can find: policies, deeds, bank details and contact lists sorted, labelled and described on a contents page. The folder stays with you.

What we do

  • Sort insurance, pension, bank, property, tax and contract papers into labelled sections
  • Write a contents page saying where each original is kept
  • Suggest a place for the folder and a way to tell your family
  • Set a date for a yearly look

What we do not do

  • Take or store your original documents
  • Provide a vault, safe or online storage
  • Replace the advice of a licensed professional on what a paper means

Fee: quoted individually, in writing, before any work begins. The first conversation is free.

Who Does What in Japan

End-of-life planning crosses several professions, each with its own legal role. We name the roles, not firms, and this page is not a referral list. Birch River Horizon does not claim to hold any of these qualifications on this site.
